    simple ≠ safe
    difficult ≠ dangerous

That being said, you're looking at it from an "I want ______" point of view. I would encourage you to look at it from a business point of view. While replacing the account that syncs with the device may not be inherently "dangerous," it WOULD be a support nightmare. The volume of calls that would come in from worried customers who just feared that the "bug" on your phone caused them to "lose" their data "without warning" would be outrageous.

Bottom line, the method to do what you're after is included. The reasons for not making it "easy" seem obvious to this consumer.

OK, so this is is what worked for me.

Again, this is a Vodafone UK HTC Magic, Android 1.5.

    Change Google Account...

Settings > Applications > Manage Applications

    Clear data for:
    Google Apps
    Google Mail
    Google Mail Storage

    Reboot phone.

Launch Google Talk. It closes itself right away first launch, so launch it again. Now it runs the Setup Wizard.

Sign in with your new Google account.

Google Talk will then log in. Gmail and Calendar will begin to sync in the background.

Go in to Contacts > Edit Sync Groups, choose the groups you want to sync. These will then sync down too.

    All done.

New here, so forgive me if I'm wrong... wouldn't you just add a new gmail account and then delete the old one?

Only in Eclair can you add multiple google accounts and select which ones sync and which ones do not.
