Thread: Canceled Data Plan, Still getting charged for data?

Default Canceled Data Plan, Still getting charged for data?

Hello everyone! Just signed onto the boards and look forward to spending some quality time here.

Anyways, onto my question. I purchased a G1 and signed up for the data plan. However, just recently I canceled my data plan because the bill was getting too expensive.

On my phone, I still get the 3g and Edge symbols at the top of the phone. I set my phone to run on 2g only also. If my data plan was canceled, does my phone still run on the 3g and edge network? If so, am I being charged for data that I am not using?

    Thank you!

no, if you have cancelled all data services on your tmobile acount there should be no reason why you'd have any internet connection @ all. Thats even including EDGE connection. The only connection you should be getting is WiFi in this case thats even if your running a wireless router @ home.

BTW, call tmobile and verify that all data plans have been taking off your account or you can just go to http://www.tmobile.com and then go to MY tmobile and verify through there.

This is a common misconception about connections. What the above poster stated is incorrect. you having a Edge or 3g listing on the phone doesn't mean you have data. 3g is for more than just internet, it's a faster connection type. Your phone connects through three different methods potentially. A "g" listed stands for GPRS, which is way older technology, and is the basebone connection. an "e" means you have an edge connection, which is a faster transfer rate (for both data and voice), and a "3g" listed means you have a third generation connection speeds. 3g is for more than just data, it's also used for clearer sound quality for calls, better call connections, etc.. Connecting through 3g doesn't mean you're connecting data necessarily, it just means your phone is connecting to the available service using a third generation speed.

I kinda talked in circles trying to explain this, so I apologize if it's confusing. It's 3am, I just got back from 5 hours of karaoke, and i'm a little drunk still.

    Pretty much correct.

I just want to clarify something. Here in the UK a data plan means that you pay for an unlimited data transfer (to avoid getting a huge bill) but if you don't have a data plan you still get GPRS/Edge/3G you just get charged everytime you access the Internet. Presuming the US networks work in the same way then this is what is probably happening to you, just delete all of the APNs stored on your phone and it won't be able to transfer data (except through wifi).

Like I said, if someone from the US can confirm what I just said is applicable to you guys then that would be great

Very well spoken for 3 am-just did 5 hours of karaoke-slightly drunk typing.
    I couldn't have done it.

Why would you want this phone without access to email & the net constantly?

No offense, but there are LOTS of phones out there that are smaller & cost less.

The call quality on the G1 is amazing though, I'll grant you that. Of course, I upgraded from a RAZR so just about anything is a step up!

Seriously? I don't get the whole "why would you want the G1 without a data plan?" stuff some of you people post. It's like asking why someone would get a pizza without pepperoni if they just don't want pepperoni.

    ...
Perhaps the OP is always in range of a WiFi network.
