Thread: automatic system updates?

    Default automatic system updates?

    Hi all.

MY only concern with buying the G1 is that it is the first version of the Android operating system. And version "1" of any software is always the most primitive and lacking features that will no doubt be added as Android grows.

    So my question is...
Will there be a feature on the G1 phone to download: android patches, android security patches, G1 future features when they arrive, etc etc...

My concern is that I buy a phone with out of date software after 1 year.

Also, another point.. where will I expect to receive applications for my phone a cable to my linux PC, or through GPRS? And a stupid question... Will all (or some) downloadable software be open source, and if so.. will the apps for this phone be free?

    Thanks.

Well I geuss your a newb but thats ok, I geuss Ill let you know that Android is opensource, some apps cost money but for right now almost all are free thanks to google's competition. you download them through the app. store on your phone. really do some reaserch into the android operating system and the phone. you will be very suprised, and see that it is the next generation for cellular devices.

Im not sure if you would just download the update right from the app. store or if you would use a usb adapter(wich comes with the phone) and go to my tmobile and download the patch. Thats what they do for blackberry, but I could see you being able to download right from the app. store. keep checking your thread you will have a crap load of answers to this in like the next hour. everyone in this forum is really helpfull. Wecome!!

We have heard they will come over air (i.e just be downloaded in the background, rather than be downloaded from the website or anything). We don't yet know if we will be prompted for the upgrade or if it will happen automatically or we will have to make it go check, etc.

That being said, there is no doubt our Android OS will update as they makes changes to the 1.0 version.

Much like if you had a Dash that went from Windows Mobile 5 to 6. Just an upgrade to the OS. As long as you like the physical make of the phone, the software is the real awesome part.

yes you be able to update the os but right now the ones that are getting the g1 now like myself are able to download most of the apps for free and I am guessing when they do come with another phone with a android os they might not offer as many apps for free like they are for this one many people look for hardward and dont even pay attention or think about the software i know you want a decent looking phone but heck I would love a pretty well put togather software in my phone that just me. Its not the greatest looking but its not bad looking either

I heard somewhere this was Android 0.9 and the 1.0 update will be released around launch perhaps OTA. In the photos I saw 1.0 looked to have a virtual keyboard.
