Well MY mail app sux the big one, no auto check email, no message notification, it downloads the same email multiple times, and will not delete messages.
Yours works... lucky
I want to disable auto-sync to save battery life. When I uncheck auto-sync automatically and leave Gmail 'checked' what happens?
Is gmail going to be pushed still even though autosync is unchecked? Or is nothing going to happen unless auto-sync is checked?
Additionally.. since I believe autosyncing is a battery hog (I don't autosync calendar or contacts at all) Is there a way to have my gmail account check for mail every 10 minutes to save battery power...
-edit... I think I figured out what to do...
1) Disable Auto-sync on gmail
2) Use the regular "Email" application to check my gmail account every 10 minutes and send me notifications.
3) Instead of checking these notifications in the "email" app, simply open the gmail app.
This way I don't have constant auto-sync killing my battery, I still get notifications and don't have to manually check for email, and I can still use the gmail app as my primary means of viewing and organizing my mail and never have to open the email app again.
Hey.. edit #2.. the mail app might actually run smoother than the gmail app.. Wtf? I might just use that instead.. it scrolls way better and my folders/labels are at the bottom of my inbox. Plus it's black.

checking every 10 minutes isn't gonna save you much battery life fyi...
put it to 30 and it may make a noticeable difference

Ok, syncing your email is a lot better then checking every ten minutes. When you get an email, Google tells your phone you got an email and then syncs, so if you get an email every hour you are only talking to gmail every hour.
If you sync every ten minutes then you are talking to gmail even if you don't have any emails so you are being less efficient.
I sync my email and calendar and my battery does not die that easy. I have even disabled all syncing and did not notice any difference in battery life.
That's not the general consensus... I was under the impression that "Push Gmail" aka auto-sync was constantly connecting to edge/3g and using lots of battery juice in the process.
And does anybody else prefer the Mail App to the Gmail App?
I know this really doesn't mean much however. With my SK it checks aprox every 30minutes for email. So every 30minutes it reaches out for an email using up some power.
Everytime there is an update to either my SK via the keyboard or by visiting the control panel via T-Mobiles website the phone Syncs up with the other.
I'd almost guess this is how the G1 operates, well don't own one as of yet so I can't be sure.![]()
Its official....turning off auto sync is the number one way to conserve battery power.
Just use the Mail App to check mail periodically.. I have literally noticed a doubling of battery juice.
Yep, I also notice a big improvement in battery life when turning auto sync off for Gmail. I wish there was an option though to check email every 30 minutes though, but I dont see an option do to do this unlike the standard Email App.
Anyone know of a way to do this?
^ditto.. All i've been doing is having my gmail forwarded to my phone as an MMS message and disabling autosync. LIke go into gmail settings and forward all incoming mail to 5182883773@tmmail.net and I get it all as a picture message. Then, if need be, I can sync my mail.. but typically I can read it find in MMS.
(Cuz I decided not to use the email app)
