Smile Audio jack - why such a big deal?

    Audio Jack not being 2.5mm and requiring adapter;

Ok, I did mini-research and wanted to find out why many of the magazines listed this as such a big flaw that G1 has. It does not have Audio Jack (2.5mm) and adapter has to be used.

Here is couple of Qs I have myself; by using the adapter:

    - is there any loss of audio quality?
    - is there any hardware related conflicts that would cause G1 to malfunction?
    - is there any software related conflicts triggered by using the adapter?

Mini-Research resulted in all answers to be NO.

So, bottom line is: by using adapter you will not experience ANY LOSS of the audio quality whatsoever.

Only downside: you will need to attach the adapter (G1 adapter audio jack adapter to 3.5mm) to your headset (headphones, ear-phones, etc with 3.5mm jack). How hard to keep that in place it is I really do not want to think about it as I do not see anything wrong with it.

So, my suggestion is: by reading the G1 reviews on different online portals, once you see this "downside" listed as one of the main issues that G1 has - please understand that information is being used not to really review the device but to point out other devices that DO have this. Reasoning is pretty much to downgrade G1 and put different devices at the spotlight. Those magazines do make profit by receiving sponsorships from other cell-phone network carriers and companies who make "other" competitors.

I apologize making the short story long, but I still cannot recognize anything wrong with getting the adapter instead of insisting on Audio jack (2.5mm)...

PS I also noticed lots of ppl state it is 3.5mm that G1 is missing. Let me elaborate quickly: mobile phones do not have 3.5mm audio jacks but 2.5mm audio jacks. So if you want to utilize your favorite pair of headphones you still have to get the adapter from 2.5mm to 3.5mm normal audio jack.

What are your thoughts on this?

well for one its 3.5mm. we shouldnt need an adapter, it should have been builtin. plus i cant have it charging while listening to something cause the adapter takes up the space. on the plus side theres speakers and i still have my ipod touch so thats not a big problem for me yet.

I see your point and I agree it can be considered downside not being able to charge the phone while listening music - however, is it really that important to listen music while charging?
I guess my point is we should be open-minded and understanding since we are paying the price of $179.99 (with the extension) for the great phone.

On the adapter and the space it takes up, I cannot agree just because some headphones have longer cables and also take space and we do not complain about it. Keep it attached to the headphones and problem solved.

It seems the charging and listening of the music from G1 is the biggest thing about this downside. I guess it is good that my lifestyle and my needs are not music oriented when it comes to G1 - therefore, I have no issues with this ...

Thanks M - very good point!

PS. I forgot to add this question: What do you mean it is 3.5mm??? There is no phone with 3.5mm built-in - just 2.5mm.
3.5mm is found on discmans, car stereo front audio-in, walkmans, speakers of home-use format, etc.

this issue isn't that a big deal to me, I don't need a headphone jack. But my bb pearl had a 3.5 mm.

So phones having 3.5 mm is possible. I've also had a phone that used 2.5 mm. So yes, I do know the difference.

Yep, I made a mistake: some phones do come in 3.5mm option. I do not know why is this good - somehow 3.5mm jack is way to big for the small phone we usually have

Lol, I guess it just makes it easier to have one. So you don't have to search for your special headphones with the mini usb to listen to music, and you could just grab any pair of head phones. The only reason I would have liked the specific headphone jack is so that I can use my headphones while charging. But I'll just get an adaptor problem solved!

My main need for the headphone jack would be to use it in the car to play through my radio. Fortunately I have an adapter that supports both a 3.5mm audio jack, and an ipod dock connector. So for now, the ipod is the only device that gets played in the car.

I bought an adapter, when I had my kaiser, that plugs into your mini usb port which allows you to plug in your power and headphones at the same time
