By UMA you mean be able to use their router to make wifi calls at home? If yes then I don't think the G1 have the hardware to do that.

Is there any reason to even waste the time hoping the UMA functionality will be added to the G1, or even Android?
Given that UMA is more of a T-Mobile standard, it seems unlikely at this point that Google would bother spending the time to add this feature.
Can anyone throw me a bone here? Or should I just give up even holding out hope?

No plans (can't do it).
Look at all the UMA phones out there or the ones comin' down the pipe. NONE of them are 3G. It's a handoff issue that can't be solved. Sucks. (So I was told by UMA team at T-Mobile).
