Alot of the time my G1 will not start downloading stuff so I have stuff queued for a long time. Is this a common problem or a fix to make it start downloading?

Just cancel and redownload. It's a known issue.

Are you downloading via WiFi, Edge or 3G ?

It's best to use 3G (if available) or Edge, then if all else fails wifi will do. (but you might have to reboot)

wifi....I've been able to kick a few into gear by disabling wifi and going onto the 3g for a minute and going back. Sometimes removing the usb cable kicks it into gear or playing a streaming radio station will start things up. I've rebooted a few times too but that seems to do nothing. Thanx for telling me it's an issue that not only me is having. Cheers!
