Android is released using a 6mo release schedule. That being said, the last drop to the master branch (which was Cupcake) was in March. After that it was about a month to release to the public.

So, based on that timeline, I'd say expect the next release to be late September/November timeframe.

Remember HTC Hero might already be using what's deemed as Android 2.0 (which might contain bugs), because they basically forked the Android branch and reskinned it. Expecting any major update in August is very ambitious. They might however patch security exploits and/or bugs -- which wouldn't be version 2.0

I'd actually be very satisfied with an update that helps ui performance when using multiple widgets on this "tock," with a major update (ie 2.0), coming up on the next "tick."

Yes, Google will release a new version of Android just as the Android Developer Challenge is closing because it makes perfect sense to get a whole slew of new applications that authors will immediately update to take advantage of everything in Donut.
I blame this man for most programming problems.

Probably not a version that runs as cleanly as it does on the hero, due to ram.

Rosie =/= Google, the two have nothing to do with each other. Rosie = HTC, and I don't see that coming on anything else without modding being involved. Someone said on the forums here that a Rogers tech support person said that the HTC sense would be coming to the Magic in a couple of months, don't know if thats been verified. Even if it is, the Magic has more ram than the G1, might still lag like hell.

Once this 2.0 SDK its available to everyone I would not wait on anything. However I would not be surprised if we got it sometime in august with a update for the G1 in late September.

    Then again, who knows?
