But you're missing the point and comparing the SDK's Emulator release to the phone release of Android. That's not what we're talking about. What we're talking about is that when cupcake came about, the difference in size between the Emulator version of the ROM from 1.1 to 1.5 was around the same increase in size as what the phone ROM had. Similarly, when 1.6 came around, the increase in size that the Emulator ROM had was again comparable to the amount of size the phone ROMs increased. So, people are happy to suspect that the increase in size of the Emulator ROM between 1.6 and 2.0 will be similar to the increase in size of the phone ROMs when they're released.
Sure - you can remove a load of unnecessary stuff from the Emulator ROM if you were going to put that on a phone, but that stuff has, for the most part, already been removed in all of the Emulator versus Phone ROMs. The bottom line is that there's some 9MB of new code to fit into around 300K of space. I imagine removing unnecessary stuff from the new code (e.g. camera flash support, large screen support, etc) would shave a couple of MB off that, but you still have a big problem and Google will have to shrink their new code by a factor of 20 to fit it on the G1 as it currently stands. They already worked some miracle to get 1.6 on the G1, but whatever that trick was it has already been used.
You missed the point here too. No OTA update can ever update the SPL on the G1. The problem here is that the only way to update the SPL is to boot the phone into recovery mode and installing the new SPL with various key pressed. As such, this is a manual procedure for which will always require user intervention.
I'm sorry, but you're completely wrong here.
I for one am here and would certainly care if I woke up one morning to find all my apps had gone, all my settings had gone, all my shortcuts, icons and backgrounds had gone, all my high scores had gone, all my saved data in all of my apps had gone, all my bookmarks, cookies, saved passwords, site preferences in the browser had gone, all the notes I'd made in notepad, my shopping list in OI Shopping List, etc. and having to remember which apps I had and spend ages downloading them and setting them all up how I used to have it. I think most people would care, and I imagine that the other 99% of G1 users who don't use this forum would care even more.
well said extorian
i dont see what evry1 is so worked up bout to be honest i couldnt wait for donut but im sure every1 will agree that the novelty of a new os fades so quickly that if the g1 is missed off the 2.0 update or forgotten about completely its not going to be a huge loss so we dont get a few extra aps support for the device wont disapear completely and people will come up with ways of running new features on old systems they always do. id be lying if i said i didnt want android 2.0 but if i dont get it then ill work around it wether that be waiting for a new phone or waiting for some genious somewhere to work out a way of making it fit

2.0 isn't available on the G1 yet. It's only available for the Motorola Droid.
Unless one of the custom firmwares has it... what's Cyanogen on these days?
Yea, I'm following all of his 'stable' releases on my G1. I quite like 4.2.5, it is very fast and has a nice look and feel to it.

There are also other concerns. By far the most commonly used version is 1.6. There are still many developers that have not made their apps 2.0 compatible. Moving to 2.0 at this time may be a bad move in terms of apps.
