wow havent heard that 1 before have u tryed calling t-mobile and letting them trouble shoot the phone and if they cant find the prob u prob should swap out ur g1 4 a new one just a suggest
i've noticed on my phone that if I havent used it for a while (15 mins or so) and I goto use the internet, the 3G connection takes about 5-10 minutes to actually establish connections even though it says 3G in the upper part of the screen. once the connection is up though, it works just fine.
is there a reason why it does this? is this maybe related to why I haven't gotten the OTA (still on RC19) because my 3G is essentially off when my phone is just idling around?

When mine did that, I just emptied the browser cache, and it fixed it. Give that a shot.
Basically I got the g1 oct 22nd and out of the box 3g worked great in orlando. The battery life really sucked though so I turned data roaming off and checked use only 2g networks. So the other day I was out and wanted to use 3g so I unchecked the force 2g box and put back on data roaming and my service goes completely out voice as well untill I either check the 2g box again or I re register to tmobile from the services menu. This only gives me g or e networks for browsing though. I've reset the cache, took out the battery and sim, called tech support (which was completely useless) turned airplane mode on and off, tried a different apn, and nothing will turn back on 3g. Any suggestions would be fantastic. Thanks
I had almost the same problem, except I could not pick up 3g at ALL here in Orlando. After 2-3 calls, everyone at Tmo CS just said they'd send out a tech to "check the network in your area". I some how got to advanced services (ask to be transfered to it) where a tech did some trouble shooting with me and then asked me if I had received a new sim card in the box with the phone. I told him I was still using my 8y/o Voicestream card and at that moment he told me he wanted me to go to a Tmo store to pick one up free of charge. Supposedly some older sims have a connectivity problem with the 3g network. Once I popped in the sim card and rebooted the phone I had the 3g network up and since then have not lost it. If you live in orlando I would sugget going to the Tmo store on Sandlake rd... Joe and Luis(store manager) are great.
Cliff notes:
-Get to advanced services
-Have them give you a new sim in your account notes
-Go to tmobile store
-Pop in sim... cross your fingers.

Went to a tmobile store today in winter park. They said that a lot of the old sim cards are not receiving 3g. They swapped it for me for free and now I get 3g again. Thank you very much for your help All~G1. It was greatly appreciated
No problem man... Glad I could help a fellow G1 owner. Orlando has a social group on this forum too, not much traffic, but helps find out things regionally.
Just curious, what would the SIM card have to do with the 3G connectivity? I mean, i know it "connects" to the network, but isn't the card just used to verify with the phone and then the phone connect to the network? I don't see how the card would be relevant with connection speeds?
im guessing choosing the network ??? i never asked for details all i know is that the guy from tmo was right. once the sim was in it worked... cant argue with good results. i think there is some type of connectivity between the sim and the network cause the adv. service rep did ask me to read him the sim id on the card itself and then that is when he told me to get a new one. i think you could find find a more elaborate answer by dialing 611![]()

I'm also in the Orlando area. When I first received the phone back in October, 3G was working perfectly. In the last 2 weeks i have trouble connecting to 3G or Edge. I only have a phone signal but no 3G or Edge icon. If I say use 2G only then I get Edge more often. I even reset the phone to factory settings to see if it was an app or something that was causing the issue.
Will go to T-Mobile store tomorrow and see if a new SIM helps correct this and will give my feedback.
