Default $299 preorder for some, $179 for others. Why??

I just preordered for $299. I'm seeing others getting this price instead. Any idea as to why this is happening for some people? I'm praying for a refund/correction. They said flat out $179.

Update: I've been out of contract for a long time, and I'm on an old, discontinued family plan starting at 49.99 with 3 additional lines. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Update again: Apparently I was wrong about being out of contract. I got a new phone in May 2007. My contract expires May 15, 2009. Since I'm not 22 months into that new contract, I don't get a discount rate. So much for being a customer of theirs for 9 years, since they were VoiceStream.

My best guess is upgrade/rebate status. Current customers are the only ones who can preorder right now, so my guess is if you are less than a certain point along in your current contract (probably a year or less) where you are charged more to upgrade. Just like any other phone, any other carrier.

That's pretty crappy of them. I've been a T-mobile customer since 2005 and I recently renewed my contract this spring because my razr broke and the only way to get a free one was to extend my contract for two more years.

I'm NOT paying $299 for a phone, especially considering I've been a customer for 2.5 years. I'm better off terminating my contract and buying an iPhone - at least At&T has 3g in my area.

THREEEAAAADJAAAAACCKKKK! Anyone know when the preorder ends? I am up for full upgrade on the 5th of October. That is less than 48 hours after I heard the presale would end. That would be soul shattering.

I just payed $179, for 2 year contract. My contract was up. This is actually very simple.

JP Go ahead and terminate your contract and get a iphone. Good riddance.

go to t-mobileg1.com and click on pre order. i'm on hold right now seeing if it really does have GPS. HTC says yes. T-mobile doesn't say!

BINGO. You have to have only TWO months left in your contract if you are on a 2-year, or ONE month left if you are on a 1 year.

Same here. The lady didn't even know what the hell the G1 was. I'm available for the full upgrade in 8 months....

You figure they'd give the $179 to loyal customers, not only the people who only have 1 or 2 months left in their contract.
