Try using handcent its perfectly capable of sending a message of 5 pages with no errors.
Although in settings set it to NOT to convert to MMS after 3 pages, NOT to split the thread either.

When I send a long message it always comes back 'failed' ...small messages always work. I have the samsung galaxy s plus and as it is only a few weeks old I contacted vodafone and they have got me to update my settings on access point names and putting in different codes and things, I also changed the creation mode on message settings to Free...but still it comes back failed!! Sometimes the person gets the message even though it says they haven't. I am at a loss at what I should do and Vodafone are all out of options.

I've heard of this from a few others using the vodafone network, on different handsets. Something you may want to check is how many SMS's you've got. I know I had my auto-delete off for a while, but after a while it started lagging until I cleaned it up. I doubt this will be a solution, but it can't hurt to try right?
