SIM card might be loose, put a small piece of paper or something thicker to lodge the SIM card in. That`s still not right though, call HTC for a replacement.
Hi,
I bought HTC Desire a month ago, at first there was no problem. But 2 weeks ago, it started to throw the "no sim card in phone" error message. But the problem was usually fixed when i restarted the phone or turn the airplane mode on and off. But last week it started to throw the error continuously. I used another sim card, I bought a new sim card, yet they didn't solve the problem. I can use these cards in other phones without having any problems. If there were any simlocks in the phone, I wouldn't have used it at the beginning i guess. I reset the phone to the factory settings, still no help. Any ideas?

This started happening to my phone as well about two weeks ago. I have an unlocked G1 and have been using my phone for about a year. It started to lose signal, switch into airplane mode, and say it had no sim card very recently. I would sometimes be able to get it working every once and a while and be able to make a call before I lost signal again. I got a new sim card today to see if it would make a difference and it didn't. Since I bought this phone on ebay I don't believe I can send it to HTC. I haven't tried a hard reset because I don't want to lose everything that I have. Does anyone have any idea how this problem was caused and how to fix it?

Just an update, if anyone knows the solution. My phone now recognizes the sim card, but I have no service.
I'm having exactly the same problem with my Samsung Galaxy S - switching airplane mode off fixed it but I reckon it'll probably end up the same way as the OP's. I've backed up my contacts on paper and will be taking my phone to a 3 shop as soon as possible :S
i'm not sure if that can fix the problem, just turn the Sim lock to off, so there is no PIN needed to unlock.
if this doesn't fix it, so mybe you could have a faulty SIM
