Default Rolling out android updates to users ...

I'm tempted to buy a SIM free phone like one of these - http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=htc+magic&hl=en - and run it on my current O2 contract in the UK.

I was wondering; if I do this, who decides when I get upgrades? You read about Vodafone in the UK rolling out 1.6 at a certain date - but when would I get 1.6?

Sorry if it's an obvious Q - haven't owned an Android before ....

You can update it via the USB cable on your PC, just head on over to HTC UK to download the update. I have a UK Spec HERO in the USA, and have updated without a problem.

Thanks. I couldn't actually find it for HTC Magic, and they confirmed " we do not yet have a confirmed relesae date for Android 1.6, at this point I can only really recommend that you keep yourself updated by visiting our website htc.com regularly as thats where the lates tinformation will be." But it sounds like if I wait patiently it'll be fine.

So I ended up buying a UK android HTC Hero, and applyed the ROM update ( http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownloa...at=2&dl_id=671 ) from the HTC site. It's upgraded my ROM but not Android, which still sits at 1.5 ... how did you get the 1.6 update? Thanks again

So I honestly can't find the 1.6 update. In the end I wrote to HTc, and they said:

Quote:
HTC does not have the version 1.6 to the HTC Hero and Only a rom update to 1.5 and we do not have any information when the 1.6 will be release and its a possibility to be up date to 2.0 straight way but its not offcial.
Which is pretty cool, but leaves me puzzled as to how others got 1.6 ...
