I am having the same issue. The contacts I have added to my replacement phone since February did not sync to my contacts. I found this out when I had to do a hard reset on my phone last week. And I am still getting this error that "sync is currently experiencing problems". Is there a way to fix this without having to load all my contacts onto Gmail?

I had the exact same problem, except mine would sync from Gmail to my G1, but G1 contacts would not sync with Gmail. All I did was delete my cache for Myfav by going into application management and it worked.

Although it did wipe my call log list and deleted one contact from my list for unknown reason.

Turn off auto sync
enter contacts to gmail "all contacts" folder
on your phone, go to settings>applications>manage apps>contacts and my faves storage.
When you get there, clear data and push ok
now restart phone and manually sync contacts

thats what i just did a couple days ago and it worked. I had the same problem as you since i got my g1

Can't say that it will work for you, as my situation was in relation to a group that I created and then deleted without moving the users in that group out first.

I tested this recently after the Cupcake update, and it has been fixed.

Here's the thread I started, and posted the solution at the end:

Had this issue when I first got my G1.
Turns out there was an issue with the data network in t-mob that day.

For futire reference and trouble shooting:
If your not within the inital setup connect to a wifi netowork to test thigns out.

If you are, do the register without a SIM trick and connect to a wifi.
Just an idea if all else fails...
