Had this issue when I first got my G1.
Turns out there was an issue with the data network in t-mob that day. For futire reference and trouble shooting: If your not within the inital setup connect to a wifi netowork to test thigns out. If you are, do the register without a SIM trick and connect to a wifi. Just an idea if all else fails...
