I think you just got a bad phone. I have had 2 G1's, a Samsung Behold II and a Nexus One with no problems at all. My original G1 was January 2008 and still works flawlessly.
Bought it on Friday, worked wonderful on Saturday and Sunday morning, until it froze. The touchscreen did not respond what so ever. Did the hard reset..cleared storage..rebooted...touchscreen is still not responding. Clearly this is a hardware issue, because i didn't install any app not belonging to Android Market...It just froze all of a sudden...i didn't do anything to it. I received a message while on stand-by and wanted to unlock to see the whole message..then i realised the touchscreen was dead.
Tomorrow it's going to service...My first HTC phone, my first Android OS...and it failed miserably.
Have any advice on why did it happen?

sounds like you got a defective phone. contact htc for a replacement. www.htc.com
it's such a shame really...I know it's a new model...yet how could they have negledted the most important asset of the device..its screen. When it worked...it was amaizing (for a year i have been using a resistive touchscreen), efortless, the AMOLED wonderful...Sadly I'm thinking on whether to get a replacement or my money back...and try another manufacturer...android platform is the future...but HTC is not the best manufacturer out there.
the phone is in service since yesterday and in less than 2 weeks it will be back.. Hopefully it will not be another lemon screen)...anyway...until then..i'll try to be up to speed with the latest Android apps..as i am a noob at this OS....Wht apps would u recomend me (preferably that they work offline)?
hi georgee, is the legend works great for you so far? I am thinking to get one for my wife
I too just got the htc Legend, and after day 2 the screen didn't work. I shut it down and then it was fine. Day 3 same thing! Day 5 I had to shut it down twice. I took the phone back and got another Legend. AGAIN day 2 the screen wouldn't work, and again on day 3! I took it back and they gave me the Moto Blur. It's similar, but I'm disappointed because I really liked the Legend when it was actually working. Navigating around the Legend is much nicer, but I feel a little safer with the Moto Blur's slide keyboard in case of screen problems.
FYI:
I had this problem with my HTC - found out it is caused by a new charger I got. Each time I plugged the phone the touch screen stopped working ...
