Same problem here. There are a couple threads on Motorola's forums too, and everyone keeps trying different settings on encryption, SSID broadcasting, etc, etc. Problem is, it's so intermittant, that some people think their setting changes are working when they're really not. Sometimes the Google Market works on Wifi, but not the browser, or maps, or vice versa. (or any combination really).

I know one thing for sure. I must enable broadcasting of my wireless router's SSID, or it will not connect period. However, not a big fan of broadcasting my SSID even though encryption is in place. Anyone else notice this too? Sounds like there are multiple problems going on. Hopefully an update will be pushed soon.

I have experienced this as well. Wifi simply doesn't seem to work most of the time. Connects ok. I have WPA/TKIP enabled. Eventually the browser just times out with "Web page not available."

So for now, I just use Verizon bandwidth instead of my own when at home.

I did not have to enable SSID Broadcast to get my Droid to work with my WiFi. I selected 'Add Wi-Fi network' from the WiFi Settings screen. I had to choose NO SECURITY in order for it to find my network. Also, for some unknown reason, it showed TWO networks with my SSID -- one listed "in range, not connected" and one listed "not in range, remembered." I clicked on the one that was listed as being in range, and then it propmpted me to enter my WPA2 key. I had to do that manually, via the keyboard, but I did it very carefully, one character at a time. When I pressed OK, there was about a 30 second delay, and then it finally said 'Obtaining IP address from <myNetworkSSID>'

Now, it works perfectly. No slowness in browsing, I can turn WiFi off and it will disconnect, then I turn it back on and it reconnects with no problems (after about a 20 to 30 second delay or so -- sometimes a bit less.)

Just FYI, I'm running a LinkSys WRT54GS (v2.1) router/firewall/access-point. It's been updated to the latest (v 4.71.4) firmware. And as I've already said, I'm using WPA2-PSK encryption. I also have Wireless MAC-address filtering turned on -- I entered my Droid's WiFi MAC address into my router before I began this little adventure. Maybe that helped? IDK, but it's worth a shot, I would think...

    Best of luck...

I've had a timeout issue ever since I switched to WPA/WPA2 PSK security for compatibility with my HP printer's Wi-Fi. Under the advanced settings in the Wireless and Networks area (use the menu button to invoke the Scan or Advanced options), I set the Wi-Fi sleep to 'never' because the problem was worse when the screen turned off and it tried to reconnect (sometimes it would, sometimes it wouldn't) when the screen powered on. It won't do wonders for battery life, but Wi-Fi power saving has never impressed me much (esp. on laptops or portable game consoles).

I don't seem to have an issue with 128-bit WEP or no encryption, but I usually deal with the timeout issue by putting the phone in airplane mode and then turning airplane mode off to hard reset all the wireless connections.

    Router: Linksys WRT54GX4 w/ 1.00.20 firmware
Router settings of note: No MAC filtering, UPnP: enabled, QoS enabled for Droid MAC address (seemed to help a little)
Wireless channel: 1 / Adaptive channel expansion: disabled / Mode: Mixed
Advanced settings: Basic rate set #1 (#2 default), short preamble type (long default), CTS Protection: disabled, Auto channel selection: disabled, beacon interval: 50ms (100ms default).

QoS - Quality of Service; CTS - Clear to Send

The default settings had worse timeout issues with the Droid. All other devices connect and stay connected without issue with the current or default settings. The performance on the Droid has always been great when it stays connected, never slow, but the timeout seems to be a kernel issue that needs addressing. WPA encryption has been an issue for the Android OS since the G1. I'm surprised it's not fixed by now. Though, WPA encryption handling is quite complex, as it is the most powerful encryption option available.

Description of issue: While connected to the wireless network over a period of time, the connection on the Droid "times-out" or disconnects without user authorization and without apparent cause (i.e. connection is always good). The notification bar icon is always present and becomes static during this time. Occasionally, the Droid will automatically reconnect after a timeout, but it's not a guarantee and will usually switch to 3G/1X more often than not. This issue occurs when the Wi-Fi is in use or the phone remains idle, so I'm not sure where the issue lies, but likely in the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) or Application Programming Interface (API).

    Hopefully someone finds a fix.

I've had some wifi problems as well. My phone doesn't seem to automatically connected to remembered wifi hotspots.

It just continually puts me on 3G.

If you are still having this issue, star below as I opened a ticket:

Okay, I get that people have found a workaround for using the wifi in their house, but the fact is that when I'm in my house... I use my computer, I use my Droid when I'm somewhere that has a wifi hotspot.

Imagine this scenario: "Can I have a large coffee cream and two sugars, a blueberry muffin, and uhhhh, can I have a look at your wireless router's settings please, I need to change some stuff..."
