Default Turn off phone use and use only WiFi

I would like to take my Samsung Vibrant to Europe on vacation. I do not want to pay for roaming in order to use the phone. I don't really care to use the phone. What I would like is to be able to access the internet through the WiFi capabilities which will be available at the hotel we are staying at.

Does anyone know how to turn off the phone use and just allow the WiFi?

you can put it in flight mode and then renable wifi, (you probably wouldn't get 3g as the frequencies are different but make sure data roaming is off anyway.)

i'd also get voicemail disabled by the carrier, if someone leaves a message you'll pay roaming rates for a calls to and from where your phone is to the voicmail number.

Ah, hadn't thought about voicemail too. I certainly don't want to get charged for that either.

I've been playing with the call settings. There's a section called Barring Calls. It looks like what I'd need. It closes off all incoming/all outgoing, all international, etc. It demands a password and won't allow me to enter one. I hadn't made a password for this phone. The default password is 1234. That doesn't work and using the 1234 it won't allow me to set a new password. Weird.

    I'm still working on it.

    Thanks for the tips, Paul.

I use APNDroid when travelling to Canada. It allows me to turn off cell phone data yet leave WiFi on. It has worked flawlessly so far. OTOH, I do want to be able to make voice calls which I know are expensive. Nobody ever calls me so I don't worry about incoming calls

OK, so that turns off the data, but leaves the phone on. Hmm. Good to know, but I really don't want to pay for calls incoming or outgoing. The phone number I have on my phone used to be our landline phone number. I get an inordinate amount of spammy calls. Can't seem to stop those. I reject them, but they would still register as incoming calls and I'd wind up paying for them.

    Thanks ewilts.
