I picked up a Captivate this weekend and so far I'm very happy with it. However, it doesn't seem to be able to determine my location via GPS. Neither maps or a compass app I tried are able to lock into a location.
Anybody else experience this? Any workarounds?
And right after I post I find other boards talking about the same issue. Hopefully AT&T pushes out a fix soon, I'd hate to have to return the phone.
Try doing what I suggest in post #10 on this thread: http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f...vibrant-37809/
If that doesn't work check out this thread: http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f...gps-fix-37644/
Thanks, I'll give it a shot today.
That did the trick, many thanks.
I'm going to leave it as be for a while. If after two weeks it still has trouble gathering the almanac data, I may switch the server and see if it's more responsive.
Well that's what the server should be doing. It should be sending your phone the almanac data that's valid for the next week or two over the internet. That's one of the main points of Assisted-GPS. If that server is too busy, or wrong, or down, or you don't have an internet connection, then the GPS will fall back to downloading it directly (and slowly) from the satellites. It's also why changing the server address may help, because that server may not be down or busy or whatever.
Ah I spoke too soon, it stopped locking into a position again. I changed the server to supl.google.com and it seems to be working, we'll see if that works permanently. I hope so, standing in a parking lot in the Houston summer is not my idea of a good time. :-)
Yeah I think it's a problem... just done some more tests myself. See post #8 here: http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f...elp-com-37972/
Hey ToJoe fix the G*DD*MN GPS issues already! You knew there was a problem with it with the European release but you still passed it on to us. I don't know what your waiting for, throw out the firmware and fix it!
