    Post MMS: Samsung Galaxy S

    Hello

I've had the Galaxy S for about 3 weeks now and it's a lovely phone, very very slick. However, I'm unable to send and receive picture messages! I've installed settings from both my service provider and the Samsung technical support team and still nothing. I was hoping that members of the Android community might have the power and the knowledge to help? I have about 6 days in the hope finding a solution before I consider returning (within 28 days) the phone to O2

    Many thanks in advance

You need the correct APN settings. Have you got them sent to your phone via: http://getsettings.o2.co.uk/ServeSettingsWebApp/

If that doesn't work, you can enter them manually in the phone settings... I don't know where they are on the SGS, but on my phone it's Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names. In there you should find some APNs listed. One of them should have these exact settings:

Access point name: wap.o2.co.uk (contract customers) or payandgo.o2.co.uk (pay-as-you-go customers)
Username: o2wap (contract customers) or payandgo (pay-as-you-go customers)
    Password: password
    Authentication: Normal
    Data bearer: GPRS
    Gateway IP (proxy) address: 193.113.200.195
    Session mode: Permanent
    Port number: 8080 or 9201
    URL address: http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002

...if not, add one which does.

Thank you extorian for taking the trouble to reply.

    Here's what I have:
Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Wireless and Networks > Mobile networks > Access point names:
Once arrived at this point I see the following already 3 APN's listed however only 2 have circular option buttons, one is illuminated green the other grey, they read as follows:
O2 WAP PRE PAY (Grey button not illuminated)
    O2-GPRS-HTTP (Green button, illuminated)!
O2 Pay Monthly MMS (No option button availble at it's side)

Within O2-GPRS_HTTP (Green button option) is the following:
    Name: O2-GPRS-HTTP
    APN: wap.o2.co.uk
    Proxy: not set
    Port: 8080
    User name: o2wap
    Password: password
    Server: not set
    MMSC: http://mmsc.mms.o2.uk:8002
    MMS proxy: 193.113.200.195
    MMS port: 8080
    MCC:234
    MNC:10
Authentication type: PAP (illuminated) choices of, None, Pap, Chap, Pap or Chap
    APN type: internet

The settings you provided I've entered and created a new APN but cannot choose it (green illuminate button) as the other APN's only appear to have that option.
Question: Should I somehow delete one of the two listed APN's? might this then create a option putton?

    kind regards
    A

The one you have selected (green dot next to it) is actually the same as the one I gave you. So it sounds like you already have the correct settings. While there are some differences, the ones that actually mean anything are correct.

You will also need MMS active on your account. Some places don't have it turned on by default. You can usually test this by having someone send you an MMS message with a small picture in it. If you get a normal text message with a URL in it to view the image on O2's website somewhere then MMS messaging is not active on your account. You would have to then call customer services and get them to switch it on.

If you get an MMS message with a button to download the attachment, then MMS is active on your account, and pressing the button should download the attachment if the APN settings are correct.

So what happens when someone sends you a message? What happens when you try to send an MMS message?

    Hi,

When I send a picture message it displays 'Sending' when receiving it reads:
    'Downloading'

A couple of things to include, I've tried sending a picture to my own number and asked my brother to send one to me also but nothing comes through either way.

Tried to get the settings sent to my phone (monthly contract) automatically from the o2 web support page but after entering my mobile number and pressing enter is displays:
Unfortunately, we are not able to process your settings request at this time. Please contact Customer Service or your account manager to discuss further options.!!!

I also phone Samsung on Thursday afternoon (8 July) and the tech support chap who took my call said that he couldn't help as they have a dedicated support team for that specific phone and my details will be passed to them and they will call me back. That should have been yesterday but no call, I rang them up again and was fobbed off somewhat and given a reference number and the promise of a call on Monday (we'll see)

I only have until about Wednesday of next week before my 28 days are up and the option to return the handset expires. It's small thing but significant to me as I have family often send and receive pics,

    Any further thoughts?

Hello and thank you to everyone how has helped and supported my thread. The good news is that my MMS issue is now sorted.

Essentially is was a settings issue which I understood but was just unable to activate (probably due to my lack of technical know how and the fear of causing more problems by deleting and/or erasing something by accident, given it's such a new phone and the one I wanted the moment I saw it advertised)

When I first created a new APN which turned out to have the correct settings there was already 2 pre-listed with one of the pre-listed APN's having green illuminated 'dot' at its side the other a grey non illuminated 'dot'.
Having created the new APN I assumed that once saved a grey dot (ready to be selected and illuminated) would automatically appear, It did not. So my new APN with the correct settings was listed but could not be activated!
At this stage there was now 3 APN's and only 2 selection dots.

On Saturday 10 July I spoke to a friendly person @ o2 who encouraged me to keep all the current and pre-listed APN's in place and create a second 'copy' of the APN I'd just populated but couldn't select, thus creating a 4 APN. Upon completion I was surprised and delighted to see appear a '3rd' selection dot appear from nowhere!

At this final stage there was 4 APN's and now 3 selection dots! (happy days)!! I could now make my selection and almost instantly received outstanding pics sent to my phone and those I'd sent instead of constantly displaying 'sending' read 'SENT' brilliant.

It's a bit of a journey but felt I ought say thank you and share my experience. I would encourage anyone thinking of getting the Galaxy S to do so its a wonderfully slick piece of technical exotica.

    Phew, time for a cuppa!

    Thank you
    A
