Sidekick 4G optical trackpad buggy?

I got my wife the Sidekick 4G, because she loved her old Sidekicks and I love Android.

Everything is great, except for the optical trackpad. It frequently goes crazy, especially outside in the sun. All of a sudden webpages will scroll up and down wildly. Trying to take a picture is nearly impossible, because the gallery will immediately begin cycling back and forth through pictures.

If I cover the trackpad with my thumb, the problems cease.

Is anyone else having this issue?
