Maybe tiki sucks at talking, an obvious but very viable answer.
That's why I believe tiki is a troll. All he does is point out these "huge issues" with every function of the phone. All I see him doing, is trying to spread FUD..

I was having problems with the voice dialer at first as well, but I finally figured out how to get it working correctly.
Basically, I had to do a couple of things:
1) not try to use voice dialing in the mall
2) turn down the radio in the car
3) talk loud (most important part)
I don't have to yell into the mic, but it does require you to speak at a higher volume to catch everything.
Last night, I said "Call Mom on Cell." It gave me a bunch of random numbers that it wanted to dial.
nope.. no trolling here. i own a g1.. in fact, if you like , i will post a pic of it featuring the 17 random 4 digit 'phone numbers' it gives me as options for dialing via voice dialing. hahaha
seriously, i dont have any accent .. i speak slowly and clearly.
the problem is the dialer needs a phonetic spelling. try it yourself! create a contact called 'cheryl' and see how you do.
my phone is fine.. 90% of my gripes are software/option based.
but yeah, i figured out today that the voice dialer doesnt work for sh!t in a crowded busy place..
I dont know what your doing but mines work fine. Speak loud and clear
step 1.. create a contact and name it 'cheryl'
step 2 .. try to get the voic dial to consistently pull that up
step 3.. realize there is an issue with voice dialing
I just got a G1 today, and I am have to say that the voice dialing feature in Android does leave something to be desired.
It seems to have problems with the phonetic sounds of sh - ch and words that can be pronounced with either a long a - short a sound (data is an example, it can be pronounced dey-tuh, dat-uh, dah-tuh and all are considered correct). These are the ones that I have noticed, there may be others that I haven't found yet.
I setup a contact named "China" and voice dial could not recognize it until I changed it to "Shina". It would find China if I pronounced the "ch" like the ch in school or schedule.
A company I deal with has Data as the first word in their name. No matter what I try, it won't find it. Here are some of the results I get back.
Call Med-Equip at other
Call Indy Dental at work
Call Ison on mobile
Call Nicki at home
Call Nicki at work
None of those come even close to being phonetically similar to Data. And please, don't use the "well you probably can't speak correctly or you have an accent" brush-off. I have a "mid-American accent", which is to say no accent at all, it is what is considered the base dialect in the United States.
I have never had any problems like these with voice dialing on other cell phones. It is as if Google used a (very basic) Soundex algorithm when they should have used metaphone or double-metaphone.
are you serious?!? my htc hermes had the best voice dialer i've ever seen, i could say anything and it would pick it up, the most random spelled name and it would recognize it. the other thing it did waaaaay better than the g1 was instead of making you press a button to call, it would read back the name and ask you if that was correct, then you SAY yes and it would start dialing.
what's the point of voice dialing if you have to look at the screen and select one of the dozen (wrong) choices it gives you.
worst voice dialer/voice recognition ever. hope they scrap it and outsource it to microsoft or whoever they use, even motorola had an awesome voice recognition software.
Ah my good ol "voice dialing sucks" thread from the day I got the pre-release (oct 22/23 '08)
New Year, New President, New F'ed up economy..
Guess what?
The Voice Dialing still sucks.
Who's the troll?
