Unlocking your G1

I just received the unlock instructions from T-mobile with my unlock code. The instructions tell me to place the foreign SIM in phone and it will prompt me to enter the code. Is it possible to do the unlock with my T-mobile sim in the phone? When I unlocked my Blackberry I could do it all using the T-mobile sim. I just want to make sure its unlocked before I do any traveling. Rather not mess with it in a foreign country.

actually I advise you to try to unlock it with ATT sim first before you travel, to make sure the code they sent u works

they sent me wrong code, and I am going to try the second code they sent me tomorrow...

So is it possible to do the unlock code using Tmobile sim in the phone? I'd like to go a head and do the unlock and then test it later with a buddies AT&T sim. I'm a 11 year tmobile customer (Powertel --> Voicestream --> T-mobile) and have no reason to ever cancel. I travel international with little notice for work and I always make sure I have an unlocked handset.

Everytime I've unlocked I found that the unlock screen does not come up UNLESS it was a non-T-Mobile sim card. By "foreign" card it does not exclusively mean out of country, but just non-tmo. I used Cingular sim card for my sidekick unlock and for my G1 I just used the ATT card both from family members. The process does not take more than 5 minutes so just borrow a non-Tmobile card to use quickly.

Thanks prash! I seem to remember doing it all from my blackberry using the Tmobile sim in the phone but then again that was a long time ago. I have a co worker that has AT&T so I should be able to do it tomorrow.

No you cannot enter the code with the T-Mobile SIM card.
You need to insert a Non T-Mobile SIM card to get the enter the unlock code screen screen.
