    Default Unlocking the G1?

Any news on how soon we can unlock the G1? I'd like to develop for it, while using it on my AT&T line. Possible?

    Thoughts?

Its locked to T-Mobile. People will be working on it, guaranteed. Watch the front page here for the story.

I'm sure they'll have it unlocked within 48 hours after release.

I'm sure it will be easy to unlock, but the 3G will not work on ATT because it is only dual-band and does not support the same frequencies as ATT.

What about Verizon? In terms of 3g compatibility

No way that the G1 can be used with Verizon; T-Mobile is a GSM provider and uses SIM cards, Verizon is CDMA and uses completely different frequencies and no SIM cards.

    Cool Re: Unlocking the G1?

according to this article it will be a 90 day unlock
    http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/...-new-phone/?em

But here’s the thing: Android, and the G1, are open. Open, open, open, in ways that would make Steve Jobs cringe. You can unlock this phone after 90 days—that is, use any SIM card from any carrier in it. The operating system is free and open-source, meaning that any company can make changes without consulting or paying Google. The App store is completely open, too; T-Mobile and Google say they won’t censor programs that they don’t approve of, as Apple does with the iPhone store.
UPDATE: PS this was posted on t-mobile's website

But why does HTC have quad-band listed in their specs:

    http://www.htc.com/www/product/g1/specification.html

    Network HSDPA/WCDMA:
    • Europe: 2100 MHz
    • US:1700/2100 MHz
    • Up to 7.2 Mbps down-link (HSDPA) and 2 Mbps up-link (HSUPA) speeds
    Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
    • 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
(Band frequency, HSUPA availability, and data speed are operator dependent.)

That leads me to believe it would do fine on AT&T 3.5G.

It's the dual band part you need to be looking at, IIRC. The HSDPA numbers. 1700 and 2100 are the 3G numbers. The others are edge numbers. (Over-simplifying a bit maybe here but...)

ATT is on freq. 1900, I believe. Not compatible.
