Default Tmobile G1 Setup on Fido/ Rogers

Alright, so i know the phone will work on the networks here (no 3G) but what i need to know is if there is a way to do the initial setup without a tmobile sim. Is there a way to bypass it, then activate wifi and then run through the setup? Cause i just ordered a locked set, so i will need to bypass the setup, put in the unlock code and then insert my sim and have fun...

Basic Question: Is it possible to bypass the initial setup, and then unlock the phone using a bought unlock code?

    Thanks.

there is a way but only if you have RC29 or modded RC30,
the instructions by JesusFreke are here:
Register without sim or data plan

Thanks for the input.... i just want some clearification...Do you know if they began shipping phones with RC 33? OR are all the updates OTA? Cause the one i bought is BNID, sealed. Can i run the phone in safe mode and then unlock in safe mode and run setup with my fido sim? Thanks.

I don't believe you need root to activate a G1 on Fido / Rogers, well at least I did not last November when I activated with a Fido sim card. Don't recall which RC I was on, however don't see why blocking root access would prevent activation using a non T-Mobile SIM card.

    I followed these instructions:

    http://www.unlock-tmobileg1.com/EN/p...s/activate.php

after getting my unlock code. The only slight issue was the MNC code did not work as I expected. I used the following:

    Settings>Wireless Controls>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names>Menu>New APN

    Fido Microcell
    APN: internet.fido.ca
    user: fido
    pass: fido

    MCC:302
    MNC:37

I needed less than 200K of Data to complete activation, then I was able to enable WiFi to complete the Google sync processing. The only other quirk is that you need to enable Data Roaming as the phone knows it is on a non T-Mobile network and will not allow any data traffic if not roaming.

A day or so after I actived, I received an update via WiFi as my data package was not in place. I usually receive the notification via Edge and then accept the update over Wifi. Currently on RC33 which I received at the begining of the roll-out.

This blog post and the comments have been invaluable.

    http://oliverfisher.blogspot.com/200...on-rogers.html

What I did, prior to inputting my unlock code, was set up the APN settings for Rogers.

    • Name: Rogers
    • APN: internet.com
    • Username: wapuser1
    • Password: wap
    • MCC: 302 - should be preset correctly
    • MNC: 72 - should be preset correctly

Then, I unlocked it, and it automatically used EDGE to set up my Gmail account (only took a few seconds). After that, the phone was completely open, so I deleted the Rogers APN settings and turned off data (I don't have a data plan). So, it required using a bit of data, but not much.

Maybe I'm mistaken but I think he will not be able to activate it because the phone is not unlocked yet therefore he won't have internet or data service to activate the phone. He can't change the phone's settings until he bypasses the registration, that's why he needs RC29 or root. Root access will allow for him to skip the registration, unlock the phone then he'll be able to activate it.

You can change the data settings prior to unlocking the phone, and then the data will get you through the initial setup (this was what I did).

If you want to avoid using any data, then you'll have to go through the root way.

Alright i found this tutorial so it looks like it should work... I think is exactly what Vimes was talking abt. I was not sure if i would be able to unlock the phone without running through the setup process, but i guess that is possible. This clears all of that up... thanks a lot guys!

Btw here is the link to the tutorial :http://modmygphone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7791
