i let the battery drain all the way down and try and let it charge for about 10 hours straight without disconnecting from the charger...
also i have 1 extra battery so far, waiting for my other 3 to come in the mail and stand alone chargers for battery only

You pay for technology and then you do not use it (turn it off in G1 case to save the battery life) - terrible and I hope they fix this.
I disagree. Sure, you can drive a 500hp car 150mph but anyone who has done so will tell you you get about 2mpg and have to fill up again in an hour. Ever seen a car race?

The metaphor applies with the G1 as well. The battery is less than 50% bigger than the Curve 8320 I had but has twice the pixel count, GPS, touch screen, 3G, big backlit keyboard, apps that jump on the web all the time. In other words, the G1 is a 500hp race car and the Curve was a 200hp sports car, as far as smart phones go . . . so if you're consuming more, you'd better have a significantly bigger battery and therefore a bulging case or you'd just better be willing to conserve and refuel more often.

I don't mind the latter option, I use Power Manager and keep my charger close at hand. It works.

Anybody try the extended battery 1600mah from usbfever? I just got it, havent used it yet 'cause I just got the G1 and want to try the original battery first and see how bad it really is. Anyway the extended batt seems be even slimmer than the original!? Definitely not thicker...but I don't know if I got what I pay for since its so cheap compared to the fommy one. Anyone had much better battery life? I'll try it in a few days...

Watts is a great app for tracking battery performance.

With minimal usage, I can use my G1 for more than 48 hours. I did all the things that you wrote. Another thing that I do is I delete my APN when it is not used and add it back to APN setting if necessary.

    what is APN? :P

also GPS programs usually have a place to enter a zipcode or address if GPS is off. I use GPS only w the maps' directions if im unsure of the route. i like to see how far I've gone.

I've tried Power Manager and it actually seemed like my battery was draining faster. I think there was something about it running in the background causing it to drain faster, because it would constantly notify me about which "profile" I'm on.

Also, I've been thinkig about this theory...do you think having a "darker" colored wallpaper would help improve battery? compared to a "lighter/brighter" colored wallpaper?

Issue #1: Power Manager can turn off notifications for profile changes -- and I have changed the preset power profiles for PM because I don't agree with all settings, and I'm sure I'm not getting 'worse' battery life.

Issue #2: A darker wall paper means less power going to fewer pixels means lower battery consumption. So yes, you've got the right idea there.
