Does T Mobile charge you to switch back and forth on data plans?
T-Mobile does not charge you to change data plans, you can actually change anything in your plan and they don't charge you for it. But if you ordered the G1 from them you pay have to jump through some hoops to get the data plan taken off, or just tell them you decided not to keep the phone I guess. See below for what you are missing.

That's pretty much how it is working for me as well. I have talked to somebody who was able to get the GMail, Calendar, and Contacts sync working over the proxy, but I haven't had such success. I'll be messing with some more settings trying to figure out if I can get more to work, but at this point I'm pretty happy with just the browser working. I'm in a non-3G area, so downloading apps from the market, streaming Youtube videos, or downloading maps would be painfully slow anyhow.

When I pre-ordered the G1 I had to sign up for the data plan in order to preorder. After having my G1 for a few days I logged into My T-Mobile and it had my Dash's plan $29.99 voice, $5.99 T-Zones. I never changed anything through My T-Mobile, or any settings on my phone. All features are working for me.

I don't have 3G either. It's actually not that slow. It takes a few seconds to load a youtube video and once a market download start it's usually pretty quick. I can stream music and browse a few pages at once as well.

Are you using the proxy trick?

Can you point me to the thread talking about this? Did that person post their settings? I am very interested, please tell more.

No. I have the G1 data plan for now, I just don't have 3G in my area. I was trying to convey that edge speeds aren't that bad for some of those uses.

Also has anyone noticed not being able to load apps when connected via wifi? I can only get them to download when I'm connected to tmobile's data.

funny thing, I noticed that to. Before I did the proxy trick, I wasnt able to access any of the apps via WiFi. I then did the proxy trick and I was able to access them, with WiFi. If I turn WiFi off, I cannot access those apps, but I can access Browser...weird...

Good to hear that Edge is acceptable for those apps, thanks for posting.

I don't remember the exact thread it was in, I'm pretty sure that it was just the other thread that was talking about T-Zones use with the G1. He didn't post any settings though, he just stated quickly that he was using it and got the Gmail, calendar, and contacts to work and not the browser. I PMed him but haven't gotten the settings he used yet.

    I input the following settings:
    Name: T-Mobile US
    APN: wap.voicestream.com
    proxy: 216.155.165.050
    port: 8080
    Username: Not set
    Password: Not set
    Server: Not set
    MMSC: unchanged from original (http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc)
    MMS Proxy: 216.155.165.050
    MMS Port: 8080
MMC: unchanged (for me it was 310, I believe it is based on your location)
MNC: unchanged (for me it was 260, I believe it is based on your location)
    APN type: Not set
I tried this setting and my internet is not working. Gmail works with or with out these setting. I noticed that there is more T-Mobile US 160 200 220 230 240 250 270 310 490 580 660 800.why are they so many and what are they for. anybody know? i think the trick has to do with that
