I have found the problem, it is not related to a specific app, but to the android system itself, just delete the last few apps you dled, by going into settings and apps, like the last 1, 2, or 3, then restart and it should fix your issues, you can dl them agian, but just wait a bit, and let the phone work itself out, its not due to a specific app, its due to dling and installing to many apps at one time, I had to do a factory reset the first time, until I came across another gentleman with this issue who found it to be the android system being overloaded, best of luck
I had this exact same issue, and could not figure out what was causing it, so I had the Sprint store switch my Hero out for a new one. A week or so later it started happening again, after I powered it down this afternoon to restart it. My guess is your initial assumption was correct - it is an app issue, not the hardware. But what apps, I wonder. I have very many installed, at least 50...this could be time consuming. I do not have any of the ones you listed as problematic.
Same issue here, has happened to me twice in two weeks having the phone. Kinda randomly uninstalled some of the recent apps i had loaded and the issues went away (taskiller was one, though i liked the app). Thanks to everyone's info on this thread.
Kind of a pain that I'll need to start rebooting my phone every time I install something though...
Doesn't seem to matter what the app is. It just randomly happens. When it does, you uninstall an app or two, and keep doing this till it boots up fine. Kinda irritating, but better that Hard Resetting. Anyone have this problem with the Google branded phones? Was wondering if it would be worth it to try to swap for one of these.
I have a Google branded phone and I'm having the same issues. Thought it was a hardware problem, but I'm getting it on my replacement Hero too. I also heard it was a problem with installing too many apps at a time and that it's not necessarily related to any specific app although I can't confirm that. Hope this gets fixed with the next update...
UPDATE: Looks like the cause of problem is identified at least

You seem to be right. I have had this problem for a few days now, dreading a factory reset. I stumbled across this thread and did not have any of the same apps as the others, but this post reminded me that it happened after I downloaded and installed 10+ apps in one shot, so I removed the ones I remembered installing at that point in time (dont even think I got all of them) and my phone booted up fine. Won't be doing any batch installs in the near future. Thanks for the help everyone and good luck!
Does anyone know how to switch the phone on 3g network (sprint) is there a particular setting? Also, when my phone flips it takes a while for the orientation to flip
I have he same problem and what I have noticed is that it occurs when a program does not release the gps function before boot down.
