I'm in houston, too, and my 3g speeds are beautiful!
I ordered my G1 on my wife's kine and had to call when it came in to move the data package to my phone. I was told that it would take from 2 to 48 hours for the switch to be made and that I'd receive a text. Well it's 36 hours now and I am able to use the internet and even see the 3G icon. However it switches back and forth between 3G and edge even when i'm not moving. the 3G lights up ocassionally..should it be solid? also I'm only getting speeds of about 200 kbps. No text from tmobile either. When I called customer support, I was told that it looks like the data plan was now on my account.......
I see everyone else pulling speeds 3 and 4 times mine and I'm frustrated. anyone else experiencing this.
BTW..I live in Houston.

I'm having the same problem (Dallas).
Switches from EDGE to 3G CONSTANTLY in my house and even clear as day locations outside.
I wouldn't mind if I was more on 3G, but it's mainly more EDGE than 3G. If I had to guess, it's about 80% EDGE and 20% 3G.
I called T-Mobile, the rep confirmed that I have the 3G plan under my account (and my new SIM card) and that there was no network issues in my area.
Rep suggested that I should restore my phone to factory data and it may fix my problem. Haven't tried it yet... not sure if I will as I don't see how that will fix my problem.
If I break down and decide that I will, I'll let you know how it goes.
What's up Nosaj13, I believe youre going through the up and down signal because you mightt be in a spot where the signal is a little dim, meaning that tmobile is still strenghtening their signals and is currently doing so, in a couple weeks around a month or so, your signal will get flawless, as this device is truly awesome on 3G AND wifi, on Edge its sweet but limits you from watching Youtube videos. im in Florida and have very good speed on edge alone. man this cells rocks like the road in Alabama! i believe your 3G coverage is a lil week just hang in there and everything will be running fine, just give tmobile time to spread the network out a bit. enjoy your cell bcuz the majority us is enjoying ours. Tip: try to pick up wifi if you can, you might have free wifi around the area. peace.
