    Default Singapore - HTC Dream - RC8??

Hi everybody, i'm living in Singapore and recently have bought a HTC Dream from my mobile service provider Singtel.

In Singapore they call this phone HTC Dream, not T-mobile G1, the phone looks exactly the same, just that instead of T-mobile on at the top of the screen, they just print 'htc' on it. and at the back of the phone, it says, 'with Google'.

I am very excited with this new purchase and have also found several flaws of the phone, nevertheless, overall i'm still happy with it, though much could be improved.

First of all, it seems that there are several different types of firmwares, (i'm just guessing). And i've also found that you could mod your phones as well.

I need help with getting to know my phone better.

this is some info i got from the Settings -> About phone :

    Model number
    HTC Dream
    Firmware version
    1.1
    Build number
    dream_stg-user 1.1 STG-RC8 128394 ota-rel-keys, release-keys

I need to know if my system is updated, and how i can update it? what's is RC8, RC30, RC33 etc?

I would like change the theme of the phone, but i'm afraid i might screw it up as my phone might not be 100% the same as the t-mobile G1, and there's RC8, RC33 etc.. I'm confused.

Hope someone can help enlighten this confused soul..

    Thanks very much!!

Hi There, the different RC types are all based on the locale of the phone, in the USA the phone currently runs on the TC4-RC33 version of Android, in the UK (such as me) the phone currently has the TC5-RC8 version, and looking through these forums it would seem at the moment that Australia, singapore etc are receiving an STG-RC8 version of the phone. im not sure how the TC5 and STG versions differ personally but i bet they dont differ by much if not at all !
    Black G1
    JF 1.41 RC8
    Dev Bootloader
    Custom Bootscreens
Apps & Caches on SD Card

    Android FTW !

Hi Monaco. when you refer to the firmware release candidate(which is why it is RC), the number refers to the number of iterations of firmware that the developers i.e. Google have created for public release (i.e. there are RC1-7 internally with Google but you only get RC8 after their debugging). Each country started on Android at a different time, so the project started when Android is in different "maturity" state so to speak and also working with different requirements of the respective telco. So in this case, when we say RC8, RC33, what is really more important is the country that ROM is build for. We used to say RC8 and RC33 is becoz RC8 refers to UK firmware and RC33 for US (since those are the first markets)..

to make things short and clear is do not look at the RC number but focus on where the ROM is build for so as not to confuse yourself...

btw, you can find some guide to unlock/hack your Singtel Dream ROM on the Singapore Android User Group site at www.codeandroid.org =)
