One other point. If you happen to lose your phone, and some honest person finds it, you can always call your phone and they can answer it. May be unlikely, but if you couldn't answer the phone without knowing the password, even if someone found it and wanted to return it, they wouldn't be able to answer the phone to find out who it belongs to!

All the more reason to root your phone.
My bootup screen shows my email on it for about 30 seconds =P
    That prevents a finder/stealer from
    A. Selling the phone (in most cases people don't want a fone thats clearly someone elses)
    B. Keeping the phone, because who wants to see someone elses name/info every time they boot up. (Plus sim lock so they wouldnt even be able to use it)
    C. If worst comes to worse, I GPS track them

EDIT: The reason i've taken such precautions is because my last phone was stolen from me when I was mugged at gunpoint. I wished so bad that I could catch those bleepers and get my stuff back. Thats not happening again. Well now i consider it a blessing because I love the G1 xD

I am with Burger on this one.

I want to be able to lock down my email/messaging/whatever when I want to.

There are things I don't want people to see when I let them play around with the phone.
