Exclamation Rooting the 1.5 cupcake version of the G1

I have not yet rooted my phone and was planning to do it this week. But I stupidly updated my phones firmware to cupcake 1.5.

I am a UK owner of the G1 phone. What should I do to root. Should I somehow downgrade my firmware.

    Is it easy to root?

I also watched a video from CoolPstuts on youtube () and his explanaton for rooting was good. Could someone tell me if that is all I have to do even if I have 1.5?

What are the pros and cons of rooting?

Thanks in advance, I am a real noob. ALL HELP APPRECIATED!

Coolpstuts does have some good tutorials.. although I haven't heard if you can root back once you get the actual 1.5 firmware. I would assume it wouldn't work which is why I have been advising my G1 friends to root before they get the OTA push :P ...

anyway you can try it out and let us know how it goes if ya want.. I would think if it wont allow the flash back to RC29 then it would probably just stop the process... but thats just a guess.. and if not, i am sure someone would make some kind of flash utility to take ya back eventually...

    good luck

People have rooted their phones to be where you are now with the 1.5 build. Unless apps and caches 2 your sd card are really important to you at the moment (and I doubt it is) ,You are now ahead of the game with the stablest firmware there is. Since you are a self-admitted noob at rooting, may I suggest seriously reading the many threads on this site before you make that move?

Let's make this 100% absolutely clear.

No matter what you have on your phone (modified or official image), you will be able to flash it with the RC30 (US t-mobile image) or RC8 (UK t-mobile image). Both of those have the root bug so flashing one of those allows you to either a: upgrade to the latest official t-mobile cupcake release or b: exploit the root bug and allow you to install one of the many custom images.

I have not really been told an answer to my question. Does that mean that I can follow any of the tutorials I find on the internet no matter how that I have 1.5 cupcake firmware. Please help because I am desperate to get my phone rooted but want to make sure I do it right. I want to get root so that I can download my apps to sd card so in-phone memory does not run out.

Thanks for your replies so far.

ive done it on jf1.5 but im really not sure if you can on the official firmware, you should be able to just use the Dreaimg.nbh to do it, but since the official firmware has just come out, i don't think many people know the answer yet
