Root to flash the Hero Rom onto Magic?

I was watching a YouTube vid and someone said that you do not need to root the Magic in order to put the Hero Rom on the phone.
I just got my unlocked (AT&T) Rogers Magic and I was wondering if this is indeed correct?

Yes once you root, you can load the HTC hero rom. I running 1.4 of the hero rom which is awesome! Head over to xda-developers.com or howardforums to download/see guides to root/flash.

but the BT doesnt work and is still laggy at times. With this version, it does seem to fix the touch screen sensitivity so the keyboard seems more responsive to me.
