Removing Icons from Home Screen

i am trying to remove a few icons from my HTC Hero; the trash can does appear on a long press on the icon. The problem is - i drag and drop the icon to the trash can, and nothing happens.. the icon is still right there! Any clue?

The trash can should change color as the icon goes into it. Try rebooting your phone, turn it off and restart it.
