You can set the settings for events and reminders in Gmail to email you which would pop up on your phone since the email will always be on and syncing (unless you turned the auto sync off). Just an idea...
I used Plaxo to sync my calendar from iCal to Google and then everything synced over to my G1. So far so good except it doesn't seem that reminders (alarms) tranferred to the phone. I tried adding a reminder "pop-up" on Google calendar, but that did not sync to the phone.
Any ideas? Thanks

Umm... I would rather it work properly. I wonder if I'm just missing how to do it OR if its a known issue and will be fixed in the OTA this week...?
When you synced through Plaxo, it probably cut out the reminder data of the events, as I don't think they support reminder alarms.

Once I got my stuff into Google calendar (on the web), I then added reminders and it did NOT sync over to the phone though...
I have the same problem, so you're not alone. I found out that an event created on my phone with a 15min reminder had the "popup" option in my calendar, so I turned off all my SMS notifications in my calendar and changed them all to Popups. I forced a sync and nothing. I forced a sync again and nothing. I wonder if I dump the calendar and reload it, if it'll fix it (and I wonder how to do that, too!).
Most annoying thing is that the icon SHOWS the reminder bell image on the event, but when I click on the event on my phone to open it - no reminder is set. Of course, on my computer, there is one.
BOO! I hope this is fixed ASAP! I like my reminders!

About reminders...
I had the same problem. Go into the calendar web app, and click settings underneath your calendar name on the left. Change the default reminder settings. And also do the same on your phone.
You might have to re-enter some events. I had trouble re-entering recurring events. For some reason, if I changed the "only this event" option it worked.
Kinda screwy but I was able to get rid of all those bells, and now reminders seem to work the way they should.
Excpet NOW my calendar hasn't synched in three days!
