Questions about setting up G1 on Christmas day

So, I will be getting a G1 on Christmas day and have 2 questions:

1) I don't currently have a data plan, will I need to wait to get one before I login to the phone with my gmail account?

2) Any idea if T-Mobile answers phones on Christmas day so I can setup my plan?

1) You need data+activation to get past the first screen. You will need to wait.

2) Sprint is closed on Christmas, so I would assume T-Mobile will be as well.

if you call tmobile today you can ask them to have your data plan to start christmas day.

I did this for my neice and they had no problem doing it, however her bill starts on the 22nd so it was easier to have the data plan start 12/22/08

Yeah, add on the plan before hand, but make sure it doesn't go into your current bill (if your bill ends before 12/25/08) or else you'd be charged for the previous month.

That way when you get it, the plan will be on your phone and you won't have to wait 24-48 hours.

They might be open, call them up and ask.

Why not go online and do it yourself. Just select the G1 as your current phone and it will you the option.,

Well, it's a little more complicated than that. My whole family is on an old SunCom plan, so we're gonna drop my line from the account and make it an individual account with a T-Mobile plan so everyone else is unchanged.

Yes they are closed on Christmas day, im almost 100% sure.

I would recomend getting everything setup a few days before hand.

One thing to consider is that you will probably need an active sim card to put into the device...so if its already wrapped under the tree...someone is going to have to open it up and take the sim card that comes with the phone out then re-wrap it, because you will need the numbers off it

Alternately...you can stop into a local store and get a sim card...then just disregard the one that comes in the box with the device.

I have another question related to the setting up process, will there be any problems with activating step like when the iPhone 3G came out. I'm guessing quite a lot of people will be getting a G1 so there will be tones of people hammering the servers Christmas morning...
