Download AnyCut (free) or BetterCut (more elaborate paid version) from the Market. Among other things, you can use it to make one-touch direct-dial shortcuts to contacts on your home screens or make direct-email or direct-message shortcuts. If you end up with too many shortcuts, make folders on the home screen and move some contact shortcuts into those. I have 6 folders of various categories like Friends, Family, Co-Workers, etc. Setup that way, I can call about 60 contacts in 2 touches. You can have hundreds of shortcuts in folders if you want. Way better than ordinary speed-dial.
If you still just gotta have it, I think the Market has an app or two that will setup regular old-school speed dialing. Do some searching.
