no text message notifications

I recently restored my phone and now I'm noticing that I am not notified of all text messages when they arrive...sometimes I'll get it...most of the time I won't...sometimes the LED will flash with no sound to alert you and sometimes the message comes through without letting me know jack squat...any ideas?

i doubt this will help but. maybe messages are open i know if i've got that text thread open it doesn't notify me when i get a new message.

It's mostly happening when the thread is open...but even before I would still get the notification...there are sometimes though that I go and like...play a game or browse the web and I never hear the ringtone yet I see the notification bar tell me that there's a new message...
