Talking Mytouch 3G - First Impressions Upon Unboxing

Hi everyone, so I had the lucky fortune of stopping into my T-Mobile store yesterday to pick up a new screen protector for my G1 as my old one was getting kind of cruddy. While checking out with the sales associate, we got to talking about the G1 and Android and a bunch of stuff.

As she was finishing up the sale, she looked around a bit and noticed the store was basically empty except for me and her so she looked at me and informed me she had a Mytouch 3G in the back that had arrived the day before and asked if I would like to help her unbox it. Of course, I couldn't resist. Half an hour lunchbreak be damned!

So we went and sat at a desk in the corner and she brought out the box, factory sealed and everything. The artwork is nice and I can confirm it is what has been leaked on this site before. I apologize but I was not allowed to take pictures as technically she wasn't supposed to be sharing this yet or I would have posted some.

The first thing you notice when you open the box is that the Mytouch comes packaged in a nice leather travel case. In fact, it's a really, really, really nice leather travel case. Think of one you would have for a very expensive electric shaver with pockets for accessories and attachments along the side velcro'd or zippered shut. Now put the Mytouch 3g at the center of it, velcro'd and zippered pockets for the headphones, charger, memory cards, and cables along the side, and some awesome embossed leather T-Mobile and Mytouch 3G branding on the front. Definitely nice if you travel with your phone and want to secure it on the plane with all parts include, or a nice package to give as a gift if you don't want to use the box.

Holding it in my hand, the phone is light. About 25% lighter or a bit more than the G1 is and considereably thinner due to the lack of physical keyboard. Happily, the phone does not trade this weight away for lack of quality. It is solidly build and feels sturdy in your hand. The buttons on the front have enough definition and a positive click to know when you've pressed them and a quick, clean action about them as well.

Once we fired up the phone, she put in her special "super-sekret" T-Mobile associate code in the email address and password section and it started right up. The home screen looks very familiar to anyone who has seen the 1.5 "cupcake" build. Out of the box, the Mytouch doesn't include any different widgets or homescreen options than a cupcake G1 does but the associate seemed to hint that she had heard an OTA including some exclusive things for the Mytouch was planned for a few months away.

The OS is very snappy and smooth flowing. It definitely processes things a little more efficiently than the G1 as it's stock running speed out of the box is smother than the G1's is. The Mytouch included all the standard apps: Messaging, gMail, IM, Gtalk, Myfaves, Google Maps, Chrome lite browser, and all the other stock US release applications.

All in all, I'm looking forward to seeing this phone released. After holding it, my fears of it feeling flimsy or toy-like have been appeased and the improvement in the speed in the OS shows to me that phone manufacturers are trying to push things forward in making the speed and smoothness of the Android operating system rival that of Apples annoying albeit effective iPhone OS.

    Cheers!

I also got to play with a mytouch recently and I must agree it very very snappy.

I also was shocked at how light it was . it made my old 2g iphone feel like a brick . It looked really sleak and stylish if it werent for the lack of keyboard id be all over it.

I delt with the iphone and its lack of keys for 2 years . I personally prefer the tactile feel of keys .

I assume it's not got any hardware differences compared to the HTC Magic, then I've had mine for about a month, go Europe! I didn't get a nice travel pouch though, just a normal slidey case. Does the myTouch come with an adapter for headphones, or only the one piece hands free kit so you have to use their headphones?

Also this rumoured OTA addons, would this be T-mo myTouches only?

I can confirm the snappiness of the My Touch. I just installed the My Touch ROM in my Rogers Magic... it is the fastest ROM that I have tried.

So, my girlfriend has pre-ordered the merlot colored MyTouch 3G. We'll see how well she liked it. She always loved my G1 she just wanted something lighter and smaller and didn't care about the physical keyboard. All things considered, the MyTouch matches that to a tee.
