Question Jailbreak / Root questions ?

Are jailbreak and gaining root the same thing? If not... what are the differences?

What are the advantages of doing this? From what I read the Jesus Freak versions do not do all that the OTA updates can do....

If you do jailbreak... you no longer get OTA updates correct?

I am confident I can handle the tech aspect... I just don't understand the advantage. What more can you do with the phone other than change the splash screen?

You won't get the best answer from me but I can help out a little. Jailbreaking is a term for the Iphone and Rooting is for the g1. They're the same thing.
I'd imagine the Iphone goes by jailbreaking because it allows them to user outside software verses Apple just wanting them to use theirs.
Rooting for the g1 refers to the root of the phone pretty much which is the linux commands.

After the rc33 update users no longer had root access to there phones which is pretty much a crying shame since having access to the root of it can provide so much.

I'm sure you've noticed that T mobile was last to put out the 1.5 update and that many rooted phones had it before. And this is one of the advantages of rooting.
You do not have to wait for your phone provider to push out the update because it works like this.
HTC makes the update but releases it to T mobile so they can add things like My Faves or whatever else t mobile does that no one cares about.

You no longer get the ota updates when you root, but it doesn't really matter because if you keep in touch with forms and all you'll most likely be first to have the updates before tmobile puts them out.

And again there are many other aspects to rooting I haven't covered but honestly there really is no disadvantage to rooting.

2.advantages ? for one wireless/wired tethering ( and a whole bunch more ! ) ..... there are WAY too many threads on this subject , i recommend searching for your answer.....

3.once you root , no more over-the-air updates . you will probably be updating much more frequently now instead of waiting for an ota update .
    4. what CANT it do ! lol

If you go to this link, he explains the advantages of rooting your G1, along with step by step instructions on how to do it.

I followed this page's instructions, and in about 30-40 minutes, had my phone rooted.

As someone else said, iPhones are jailbroken, Androids are rooted...

Jailbreak is an iphone term don't know who coined it.
Root comes from the linux/unix world, it means having total administrator rights over the system, top most user level.

I rooted my phone to be able to:
Have bluetooth transfer capabilities with my mac, using "Bluex"
Also wanted to use my phones 3G to surf from my laptop using "wireless tether for root users"
and some other minor apps you cant install with having root.

Also you get to install any build you want, for instance i had cupcake running months before it was even out, and i now have One of many Hero builds out there running with adobe Flash in the browser.

I think we've posted enough information for a normal non rooted phone user to take in all at once, lets give it a day or two to really sink in how much better having root is.
    lol

    ^ haha, thank you all.

I imagine I will root. Is there a way to make a backup so I can go back to what it was PRE-root (non-rooted with cupcake)?

I have not read the link with step by step guide yet so that I may answer my question, thanks everyone!

ALRIGHT, so after reading several of the root threads, it seems like a lot of people have issues.... I guess I need to wait.

I won't urge you to root, though I can only look out for your best interest lol. There is an application for like 5 bucks call nandroid? Or just search backup in the market and figure it. Stores everything.

Just root to jfs 1.5 and be happy.

The whole apps 2 sd and all is great
But it fails a lot because the phone wasn't meant to handle it.

And other ports from Hero and such fail as well.

If you root to jf or the dudes/hyuragogjdhdhd?1?! However you spell it. Cyans etc they all have stable ongoing updated builds.
