    Default Is the GPS free...

...or a part of the data plan? This may be a silly question but I honestly didn't know the phone had GPS until this morning.

I know everything you can do with it, but does it work like a GPS in a car word? That service is obviously free that's why I'm asking about the phones GPS.

I tried searching but I think no one had the same question as me.

The gps is free , to bring up the map you need data. So , if you were in an area without data the gps will still find you but the map will not load .

G1 is not on Verizon, so using the GPS chip on the phone is definitely free. You can use that to pin-point your exact location on Google Maps and use it for many other functions that depend on that. And yes, Google Maps needs that data connection to stream the map tiles from Google servers. Although, if there is some other application which needs just the GPS coordinates and does not depend on Google Maps, then it won't use any data.

Although, to use it like the GPS navigation units in the cars, you would need a separate application called TeleNav, which is a separate service which costs $9.99/month.

This is because the map database that Google Maps uses has specific terms that any application using those maps cannot provide spoken turn-by-turn directions. If you can do with reading the list of directions in Google Maps for your navigation needs, then you wouldn't need the TeleNav service and can use the GPS on your phone all you want!

Wow thanks for that. I basically wanted to know if the GPS was free on apps that don't use data. I haven't downloaded any yet but I was just curious in case I found one in the future.

There are a few different apps around at the moment that do GPS. AndNav2 and Nav4all are on the market at the moment. They are good, but no where near as sophisticated as a tom tom.

If you don't have a data plan, they will cost you as you will have to download the map data for your selected route, however the actual cost of using GPS is 0.
