Problem resolved. My phone "hung" when playing angry birds (oh the shame of admitting that) so I had to disconnect the battery to restart. When back up the speakerphone and home buttons were operating normally again.

It's not rooting your phone that caused the problem, but rooted and then flashing some custom ROM's (coz I see it's not all ROM caused this bug).
and unthick Flip for speaker doesn't help.
Mine gone when I unplug the battery. I hope It'll help.
and I'll remember to do that after everytime I have installed custom ROM's.

I have the same issue with my xperia play running 2.3.3. Tried letting the battery run dead to no avail. Any help would be great. Thanks

take the battery out for about 20 secs then turn it all back on worked for me

I had a similar issue. You all might wanna try the below steps. It worked for me
PS: I have a HTC cell, but i guess the other phones will have similar options.

1. Go to settings--> Dock--> Uncheck Auto launch(launch car panel in car kit automatically)
2. Set your G sensor calibration right.
3. Restart your phone.

Mine started doing that and I can't remember anything I downloaded recently to do that. I really want to take my phone back because of it but it's past the two week return policy for Verizon. I don't know what to do.

OP, do you have "Flip for Speaker" enabled? I was encountering similar issues on my phone, and that setting was enabled by default. My phone didn't seem to be registering if it was "flipped" or not properly (or I was doing something wrong). Disabling this has solved the issue for me. Also keep in mind a lot of these phones are surprisingly loud and aren't intended to be held directly against your ear.

Flip for Speaker setting should be under Settings > Sound options.

I have a similar problem with my Huawei Pillar and when ever I make an outgoing call the speaker phone is activated and I have to turn it off. After reading some of the posts above, I could figure out that this problem could be connected to my bluetooth headset. So I tried many permutations and combinations and finally solved it by holding the speaker button while switching-off the bluetooth headset. Bingo!!! it worked. It should work for you too. what to do guys please help me I did sim card out and restart the phone even formatted twice but the problem is still sucks..
