Put your apps on the SD card and you wont have to worry about this.

Hey... I am having the same issue. However, a lot of time has passed since this post. Says I have 73 Mb used of my 96.. and the phone has been slow as )&*%)#*%&.

Has anyone created a memory optimization program?

Any other options besides restoring the phone 3x?? Still waiting for my OTA 1.5 update... will this fix?

96MB-73MB=23MB left. That's pretty marginal and probably why your phone is slow, especially if you're using something like one of the home replacement apps. If you get below 20MB the phone will likely become unstable too.

You want to have at least 25-30 MB free memory. So make some more memory space - clear out any browser caches, cookies, history, uninstall any apps you don't use, etc. If you get to over 30MB and the phone is still slow, post back again because you may have other problems..

There's no 'memory optimization' app I'm aware of. Probably because Android is Linux and Linux does a terrific job of optimizing memory usage. But Linux can't create empty memory where there is none. Make some space.

"memory" and "storage" aren't the same thing, right? does the G1 use internal storage for RAM purposes, or is there a separate area for this? also, is internal storage used for swap space?

Honestly, I don't know the real difference in this case, never fooled around with finding out the details of how the G1 allocates it's memory. I do know that if you go into settings and check the available space under 'SD card & phone storage>Internal phone storage' a G1 will probably slow down if it's less than 20-25MB, and might get unstable if it's less than about 18-20MB. I know my G1 does. So apparently that space may used for either RAM and/or swap. Maybe somebody smarter here can give you a better answer.

Guys I got my t-mobile mytouch 3g recently. And was surprised to find only 263 MB internal memory free. The spec says it comes with 512 MB of memory. Was wondering if the Android OS itself occupied about 240 MB. Called the t-mobile customer care, they have no clue about these phones. After reading this thread, I'm breathing easy now. Looks like the OS could take up so much memory.
