from my experience using the phone over the last couple of weeks I would say that the software htc has made for the phone is unoptimized I say this cause if you use different software on the market like phonebook app compared to the people app that htc have made for this lovely phone you can notice how much smoother thlicking through your contacts names compared to the app that htc made, the sooner that htc bring there updates the better the phone will be.
The latest version of the software clears a lot of problems of slowness up!

I've stopped killing my tasks and have let my phone handle things and to be honest, it's just as fast. In fact, my Hero is running super smooth 99% of the time.
There definitely seems to be certain things that help make it lag though. I'm almost sure that Google Maps, once it has been run, can start to cause lag, especially if Latitude has been turned on and then off.
The People app is certainly slower than most areas, although it's definitely useable. I think Hero tries to update Facebook status's etc when you go into this which causes the slowness, but it can definitely be improved i'm sure.
I'm starting to use dialer instead now, as this lists all contacts, with pics, and is super smooth and quick and you can click and get into peoples details, call, sms etc very easily from here.
I also play music in the background, either using built in player, or now my fave TuneWiki, and i then browse and use my phone as normal with no slow down, and definitely no stuttering like some people are reporting.
I've stopped using Peep widget and just pop into Peep app as and when i get notified of tweets or want to tweet myself. I stopped using clock widget too, as there is already a clock in the notification bar. These have sped things up too. I only use calendar and bookmark widgets so far, along with a couple of screens worth of icons and shortcuts.
All in all i'm loving my Hero now. Sure, i'm looking forward to optimisations being done by HTC, but for such early days and such a new build on Android, i think it rocks!
Ah, and i mean't to also say. Whenever the Hero is doing background syncs, you pretty much always get a bit of stutter. I almost always know when Peep is checking for tweets, and sure enough one will arrive. The same for the People app, when Hero checks for updates for both Facebook and Flickr.
You notice this surge of resources too when downloading from the Market.
I'm hoping HTC/Google will optimise their network programming and make background network tasks more efficient and less intrusive to the user.
Try playing with the sync frequency sett5ngs f6r the applications that sync data. My Hero has run pretty smooth since I got it, and I recently changed the setting on my twitter widgt to pull data every 2hours instead of every 30mins and now it runs even smoother.
