Default HTC G1 - Home button/System recovery issue

Please excuse me if I'm posting in the wrong sub-forum.

I recently purchased an Unlocked and rooted G1 for my father, and he seems to have... broken it. He said he didn't do anything to it, but he called me earlier saying that he was having trouble flashing roms on it, or something along those lines. I'm not too tech savvy, and I don't know anything about these Droid phones, but I want to fix this.

The phone boots into 'Android System Recovery,' specifically
    Build: RA-dream-v1.7.0/

My first guess was to wipe the phone back to factory settings, and go from there, but this recovery system requires you to "Press HOME to confirm." The catch is the home key doesn't work. I've tried everything, and googled to kingdom come to no avail.

Can I change this 'System Recovery' so that it accepts confirmation from the send button rather than the home button? And if I do that, do you think wiping all the data to factory settings will fix the problem anyways?

    Thanks for any help,
    Josh

If you can get into the recovery you can either flash a new rom or there is a setting, the third one down in recovery, backup/restore, select that option and in the next screen there should be restore, select that option and restore it to the one with the latest date. If there are no restore points you will have to put a rom on the sd card and flash it. Cyan is the one I recomend, it's by far the most popular and feature laden rom.

And no, you can't change the buttons to use with the recovery console.

So now I know how to fix it (thanks) but if I can't use the home button then I cannot select any options, it just aborts whatever I pick.

SO I downloaded the Cyan rom and figured out how to flash it using the recovery, but it still asks me to confirm with HOME. I can't get the home key to work for the life of me.

Wow. Thanks for the help! I'll fill you in on what I've found in the meantime.

I Found a forum where a guy was having the same problem, and someone said:

    --update_package=SDCARD:update.zip" > /cache/recovery/command

    Try that
Since I haven't been able to flash the Cyan rom you suggested for obvious reasons, I looked at the other zip files on the sdcard and used "update-cm-6.0.0-DS-RC2-signed.zip".
It looks like this is command console:
    Press <enter>
    / # --update_package=SDCARD:update-cm-6.0.0-DS-RC2-signed.zip" > /cache/recovery/command
    >
Unfortunately the person who suggested that to the other guy never told him what to do next...

I quickly made a new recovery which uses the MENU button instead of the HOME button as confirmation-key : recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-MENU.img (MD5 = c0f58bd136a8f108fadcdcf1c56eec39)

Flash this recovery (fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0-MENU.img) and use the MENU key to confirm things...

I hope the MENU button is still working
