I have the same question. I can't seem to determine how to clear out ringtones I no longer want, even if I remove them from my SD card.
Whenever you put ring tones on the phone, you have to go into the music player, play the song and then select "Set as Ring tone" this makes it an option to show up whenever you're setting a ring tone. But how does the phone know which are ring tones and which aren't? Where does it store them? And how do you remove a ring tone? I initially made an ENTIRE song a ring tone, and then I cut out the part that I wanted and made it the ring tone, so now I have two identically named songs as ring tones and want to remove one of them.

Hello Black G1.

Every day I'm forced to battle attention deficit disor...oh look, a squirrel!
I have the same problem, I am afraid that the file might be coped to the phone memory, once there, I dont know how to delete it. maybe you know more?
how the hell do I hide these ringtones from my music player?
Anyone have answers to these? I'd really like to clean my ringtones up. I even tried downloading a file manager off the market, but it wouldn't work for me.

make a folder on the microsd card called "ringtones" and then save the mp3 or what ever format ringer there then it should be under the ringtone list ! i just tryed it on my phone and it worked
I get how to get the ringtones ON there. What I want to know is how to get them back OFF. I put an mp3 on my SD card, and was able to pick it as a ringtone. I then wanted to remove it, so I deleted it off of my SD card, but the ringtone remains. It seems like by choosing an mp3 as a ringtone, it pulls it into internal memory.
As for the file manager I tried to use, it was this one: http://www.android-freeware.org/download/manage-1.2
Just doesn't seem to install or open.

It does not do that. I'm not sure where it stores the marker that says to add teh mp3 name to the list of available ringtones.
At any rate, I would just avoid the issue by adding a 'ringtones' folder to your sd card, and adding and removing mp3s from there. using this method, they go away when I delete them. Then again, even the ones I added via music player disappear from the list when i remove the sd card, so I'm not sure if you are seeing a bug or what.
Don't worry about your internal memory tho, the phone isnt storing the mp3 there.
