Dam I cant wait to get 3G. It would really help at work. Hurry up Tmobile!!!
So while I'm at home, I always leave the wi-fi enabled, because up until today all I had was EDGE coverage. I didnt know anything about 3G coming to my area yet, so I had no reason to check it very often.
But tonight my internet went down for a while during my CoD5 session, and so I decided to play around on the G1 for a while.
With no wi-fi, I noticed a different icon in the notification bar... Where it used to have the up/down arrows with an "E", it now says "3G"! I was floored!
So I decided to do a speed test, and I'm very pleased.
I used www.dslreports.com/mspeed
It gives you options to download a 5k, 50k, or 100k file to guage your download speed... Well, none of those worked for me, becuase the test returned (when trying the 100k test):
unstable/too fast - a result (1.012s) please choose a larger file
And it links you to a new page with different file-size options: 200k, 400k, and 1MB
So I tried the 200k, thinking "Surely where I live 3G isn't so great"
Same error: too fast
So I tried 400k... TOO FAST!
So I tried to 1MB test, and my results were pretty impressive, imo:
824 kbit/sec
0.623s latency
I know that 3G speeds have been discussed in detail on these forums, but since I had no 3G and didn't expect to for a long time (AT&T has been trying to roll out 3G forever and they still only cover 1 area in my sate... and there are probably 4 cities in my state larger than where I live), I didn't pay attention to the results.
What do you guys get running that same test?

And if you get the chance to use a bigger file, use the 1MB file, so that we can more accurately compare.

congrats. I get spotty 3G coverage at my house .. it seems I'm just a tiny bit too far from Philly to get it all the time. But the second I'm on the road or train into work I'm all 3G -- I hope it gets more solid AT my house...but thats what the wifi connection is for anyway...![]()
yea im in warminster pa and they refuse to put up new antennas for 3g so i dont have it at home but at work 5 min down the road (here now) i get it...
1MB test:
470kbit/s
.484s latency
Congrats on the 3G mixpix. Your truley going to love it. Especially since your paying up the *ss for it lol.
When you go to dslreports.com click on tools at the top then go to the speed test. There is is two types of test that they have for the iPhone. One uses iTunes(i think) so we cant do that one but the other we can do. Its great because it lets you select what kind of network your on. GPRS, Edge 3G or wifi and it shows your results and other peoples average depending on the connection. Try it OUT!
i got 655 kbps with about 245 latency
cant put this damn phone down...
OK, so when is it my turn to wake up to 3G in Virginia Beach?

I've always had amazing coverage in Manhattan, even in subways sometimes. However, whenever I go to central NJ or Maryland to visit people, my coverage is pretty bad. I even got switched to G or whatever the step below EDGE is.
As long as it works at home, I'm ok with it.
I get sketchy 3G service at my house as well. I am smack dab between 2 cell towers and it flip flops between them, so sometimes I have 3 bars of EDGE and sometimes I have 1 bar of 3G. I just keep my wifi on and I'm good to go. BTW, when I leave the house, I get 4 bars of beautiful 3G service. :-)
I've got solid 3G at home and it rocks. I've gotten very used to the speed. But I'm traveling for Thanksgiving and there's just EDGE where I'll be going. Boo...I'm gonna miss my 3G.![]()
there are a few apps that you can check your dl speeds on. and also performance apps like the caffeinemark app.
I travel a lot and have been fortunate to be in areas that are 3g! Hou, Dal, Den, and at home in SF
