Plug it back in see if it shows up in the phones notification bar. Then ignore anything the computer says open as a drive.
I'm trying to get music on my new g1 that I got a week ago from my computer. I have a sony vaio laptop with vista on it. When I connect it through the given usb cord I get a notification on my computer saying usb device not recognized. I've read all previous threads about this nothing really like mine. I have the newest update on phone. And no mount or usb notifications pop up on my notifications on my phone. I really don't want to get a card reader it seems like only option... can anyone help? P.S. I'm sure my card works I can save pics I take on my phone and I've unmounted it under settings and put it back in. Nothing.. please help.

What version of windows are you using? Pretty sure anything less then XP wont recognize it without a driver.
Read... it's Vista.
What brand of card are you using. My brother and a friend both have G1s (thanks to me) but their cards will not read on XP at all only on my vista notebook. I know you are using vista yourself my point it that it could simply be the card even if you can save to from the device.
Try mounting it to a diff computer if you get a chance. That will tell you if it's the card or the computer.
I haven't tried another computer something I wanna do but I got a lot of good music on my laptop I want on my phone.its a sandisk 1gb that came with the phone. Another note it says on my computet that the usb device attatched to the computer has malfunctioned my phone is the only thing attatched so it gotta be it plus it pops up when I attatch my phone.
Worse comes to worst, I recommend Orb.
I don't really have an idea as far as what could be happening.
No "New Hardware Manager" message pops up on your taskbar (on the computer)?
That's what happened for me, all I had to do was install the driver and it works fine.
What exactly happens when you attach the phone to the computer?

Assuming your laptop has a card reader, is it not possible to just insert the card directly into you computer?
how about trying a different usb cable or different usb port on your laptop?
Do you have USB debugging enabled?
