hard reset - always possible?

i recieve my HTC magic tomorrow and I'm reading about all sorts of 'ROM upgrades', 'wierd Apps' and other problems and possibilities

my question is: can I always get back to factory reset or is it possible to screw that up as well?

always . if you mod your phone , you will be "wiping" or factory resetting your phone fairly often if you flash lots of different roms . it becomes second nature

my bad , there is a situation that you will not be able to factory reset . if you install the "danger" spl . if your phone isnt compatable with it , you will brick it and wont be able to get into recovery . sometimes , even if your phone is compatable with it , it still will completely brick your phone . thats why its the"danger spl . i believe , only some hero roms require it . i dont need/or use it i m on cyanogens rom . it gets updated frequently , sometimes 2-3 times a day , at least 2-4 times a week . i would say its the most advanced android (of any kind ) rom out there (currently 3.9.11.2 but will be at 4.0 tonight/tomorrow)
